House passes bill to control drug prices

SPRINGFIELD — Legislation to keep the price of generic prescription drugs down passes in the House. HB 4900 goes after drug companies accused of price-gouging with state-sponsored insurance plans like Medicaid. Ben Calcaterra is a pharmacist at Logan Primary Pharmacy and Chairman of the Illinois Pharmacists Association. He said people with state-sponsored insurance plans or private insurance may not seen much of an impact. “Their co-pays would stay the same,” Calcaterra said. “It’s just a matter of what rate the insurance company is going to pay for that same increased drug price.” Since that insurance company in HB 4900 is essentially the state of Illinois, that means more stress on an already difficult budget situation in Springfield, and possibly more tax hikes down the road.
