Dignity of Life

As a Catholic health care system, Presence Health is committed to providing compassionate care, especially for the poor and vulnerable in the communities we serve.

Because each person is created in the image and likeness of God, we are committed to promoting and defending the dignity of human life.

We advocate for a consistent ethic of life from conception to natural death on a range of issues including a fundamental right to health care, alternatives to abortion, physician-assisted suicide, human trafficking and immigration.

We adhere to Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services.  The directives provide an inspiring vision of the social responsibility of health care providers and what medicine can contribute to individuals and society.

Presence Health is also concerned about other essential issues affecting the ability of all to flourish, such as:

  • Fighting for social justice. In addition to social determinants, we support measures that seek to eliminate human trafficking, eradicate opioid addiction, promote environmental responsibility and protect immigrant communities.
  • Supporting the elderly and disabled. Improved access to palliative care is imperative for those with chronic and life-limiting illnesses, and a core component of Presence Health. We support sustainable financing for long-term care facilities and services for elders and persons with disabilities, so they are able to receive long-term care services in the most appropriate care setting.
  • Protecting life. Mission and identity are integral and indispensable aspects of Catholic health care. We support measures that preserve provider conscience protections that allow us to provide care consistent with our faith and advocate for policies that acknowledge our religious, ethical and moral values.

Presence Health works in partnership with individuals and organizations that have deep knowledge and expertise in these areas. To see what public policies we have supported in these areas, please see our Legislative Year in Review.
